The NBC2 Investigators have uncovered a huge spike in the number of kids being involuntarily committed for a psychological evaluation, under the state’s Baker Act.
The Baker Act allows judges, law enforcement officers, and physicians, to send a person who they believe has a mental illness, for a psychological evaluation at a psychiatric facility.
Juvenile Baker Acts have increased 49 percent statewide, over the last five years.
And in Southwest Florida, the growth is even more stunning:
-170 percent increase in Collier County
-136 percent increase in Lee County
-97 percent in Charlotte County
